Former President Trump joked during the presidential debate with Vice President Harris that he was going to “send her a MAGA hat” over how she has shifted her policy stances during her presidential run.
During her first run for president in 2019, Harris ran considerably to the left but has moderated her stance on several issues after becoming the Democratic candidate replacing President Biden.
“Everything that she believed three years ago and four years ago is out the window. She’s going to my philosophy now. In fact, I was going to send her a MAGA hat,” Trump said, which Harris responded to with a laugh.
He accused Harris of being a “Marxist” as he has before, having nicknamed her “Comrade Kamala.”
Harris said during a sit-down interview with CNN that her “values have not changed” in defense of her current positions. She said her overall goals like addressing climate change and securing the southern border have remained the same.
Trump has sought to brand Harris as far left and tie her to issues she ran on in 2019. He has also accused her of stealing his idea to end taxes on tips after she said she would support the proposal that he initially made.
The issue has become a key attempt from both candidates to try to appeal to working-class voters.
