Two security guards were injured in a violent, “unprovoked attack” at the North Hollywood Metro station Saturday evening, prompting one of them to open fire, LA Metro officials revealed on Monday.
The situation unfolded around 5:20 p.m. at a guard booth on the street level of the station, located at Lankershim and Chandler Boulevards.
Initial reports indicated that a person attacked the guards with a knife or another sharp object.
“During the confrontation, one of the guards discharged a firearm in self-defense, striking the assailant who initiated the attack,” LA Metro said in a statement.
Both security guards and their attacker, whose identity hasn’t been released, were transported to local hospitals for treatment. The nature of their wounds was also not disclosed.
“Metro extends its wishes for a speedy recovery to both guards and thanks the Los Angeles Police and Fire Departments for their quick response and assistance,” Metro said.
The Los Angeles Police Department is handling the investigation. Anyone with information is urged to call LAPD’s anonymous tip line at 1-877-LAPD-24-7.
