St. Joseph Medical Center welcomed its first baby of the year — just a minute after the ball dropped.
The baby, Lando Antonio Nakia Jackson, was born at 12:01 a.m., weighing 5 pounds, 15.6 ounces, with a full head of hair.
“He came at the perfect time and the perfect moment,” said the mother, 23-year-old Michaela Lyons, alongside the father, Orlando Jackson, both of Essex. “He definitely made a grand entrance.”
The couple sat in a hospital room at St. Joseph’s on Wednesday afternoon with small New Year’s decorations on a bedside table. Lyons and Jackson said they would be cleared to leave the hospital after a few minor tests were completed.
Lando is one of the first babies born into Generation Beta, which spans from 2025 to 2039 and follows Generation Alpha.
“I do think it is special, especially because he is a part of a new generation and is one of the first ones that popped out,” Lyons said. “I think he has set the tone for us that this year is going to be a great year — the best year.”
Lyons’ due date was set to be Jan. 24, but her water unexpectedly broke around noon on New Year’s Eve — leading to Lando’s birth just one minute and nine seconds after the start of the new year.
Despite being weeks early, Lyons said Lando is healthy with no issues.

Jackson, Lando’s father, said he is excited and has been waiting to have a son. Lando is the couple’s first boy — joining his sisters, four-year-old Olivia Raine, and one-year-old Maiyay Mulan.
“I hope everyone who has babies this year are going to be just as excited,” Lyons said. “I know it’s not going to be the same, but they are blessings no matter what.”
