Here’s a roundup of state college football games this week.
Division I
Towson 26, Monmouth 14: Sean Brown threw two touchdown passes to Carter Runyon and the Tigers continued their mastery over the Hawks on Saturday.
Towson (4-4, 2-2 Coastal Athletic Conference) improved its overall record against Monmouth to 9-2 and remained unbeaten (6-0) on the Hawks’ home turf. Monmouth entered Saturday with the top-ranked scoring offense in FCS, averaging more than 44 points per game, and was held to a season-low 14 points. Towson forced two turnovers and another pair of turnovers on downs.
Brown helped lead a nine-play, 70-yard drive to start the third quarter that ended with a 3-yard touchdown pass to Runyon to give the Tigers a 17-7 lead.
With 3:56 left before the third ended, Derek Robertson threw a 33-yard touchdown pass to Gavin Nelson to bring the Hawks within 17-14. Towson got a 22-yard field goal from Keegan Vaughan for a six-point lead, and almost midway through the fourth, Brown threw a 6-yard touchdown to Runyon to seal it.
Vaughan’s 23-yard field with 1:40 left in the first gave Towson a 10-7 lead it never relinquished.
Robertson threw for 305 yards with a touchdown and interception for Monmouth (4-4, 2-2). Nelson had 133 yards on nine catches.
North Carolina Central 16, Morgan State 7: J’Mari Taylor rushed for 200 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries, Walker Harris and Markell Quick connected for a 49-yard touchdown catch and the host Eagles beat the Bears on Saturday night.
Harris finished 18 of 31 passing for 216 yards with an interception and Quick had five receptions for 96 yards for N.C. Central (6-2, 2-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference).
Tahj Smith finished 9-for-23 for 102 yards and Jason Collins Jr. rushed for 72 yards on 14 carries for Morgan State (3-5, 0-1), and his 2-yard touchdown run with 9:58 to play trimmed the deficit to 10-7. The Eagles responded as Taylor scored on a 50-yard run to cap a six-play, 73-yard drive to make it 16-7 after a failed extra point attempt with 6:37 left.
Harris threw a long pass to Quick for a TD to open the scoring with 7:06 left in the second quarter and Kaleb Robison kicked a 21-yard field goal midway through the third to give the Eagles a 10-0 lead.
Division II
Wheeling 26, Frostburg State 25: The host Bobcats (6-2, 4-2 Mountain East Conference) led for most of the game, but the Cardinals (4-4,3-3) scored two touchdowns over the final five minutes in a come-from-behind win Thursday night.
Jordan Marcucci had a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the opening drive and Brandon Keen kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead with 14:47 left in the first quarter. Seven seconds later, defensive back Marquise Allsup (St. Vincent Pallotti) had a safety to increase the Bobcats’ lead to 9-0. Frostburg State had its biggest advantage, 16-3, in the first quarter.
Virginia Union 56, Bowie State 28: The Bulldogs piled up 234 yards on the ground, including 181 from Micah Robinson, but it wasn’t enough in a loss to the Panthers (6-2, 5-1 Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association) on Saturday afternoon. Kevin Taylor led Bowie State (2-6, 2-4) with 98 yards through the air, including two touchdowns and one interception. Joseph Towler had five catches for 106 yards and one score, while Micaleous Elder had five receptions for 73 yards and two touchdowns.
Jada Byers rushed for 348 yards and six touchdowns on 35 carries, including scoring runs of 75, 69 and 41 yards, as Virginia Union recorded 613 total yards.
Division III
Eastern 24, Stevenson 14: Brett Nabb rushed for 131 yards and two touchdowns and the host Eagles (3-4, 3-3 Middle Atlantic Conference) outscored the Mustangs 17-7 in the second half to win Saturday. Nyaire Wilson went 22-for-42 for 242 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions and LJ Blackwell rushed for 98 yards for Stevenson (4-3, 4-2), which had its four-game winning streak ended.
Johns Hopkins 16, Ursinus 7: Geoff Schroeder rushed for 131 yards and a touchdown and James Rinello completed 18 of 32 passes for 174 yards and a score to lead the visiting Blue Jays (6-1, 3-0 Centennial Conference) over the Bears (6-1, 2-1) on Saturday. Will Leger had five catches for 65 yards and a touchdown, Matthew Konkol recorded 3 1/2 sacks and PJ Penders had 10 tackles and an interception for Hopkins, who climbed to first place in the Centennial Conference with a third straight win.
Franklin & Marshall 24, McDaniel 0: The Green Terror recorded three interceptions and forced four fumbles, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the host Diplomats (4-3, 2-2 Centennial Conference) on Saturday. McDaniel (1-6, 0-4) finished with just 53 total yards of offense, including minus-25 net rushing yards. Damonte Gifford had two sacks and forced three fumbles and Malachi Murph had two interceptions for the Green Terror.
Salisbury 42, Rowan 35: Michael Cox rushed for a 2-yard touchdown with 17 seconds left to lift the host Sea Gulls (7-0, 4-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference) over the Profs (3-4, 1-2) on Saturday. Cox (63 yards), Ronald Clark (113), Dario Belizaire (56) and SyRus McGowan (40) helped Salisbury rush for 282 yards and five touchdowns while McGowan completed 10 of 11 passes for 143 yards and a score.
