With NFL free agency effectively over and the 2025 NFL draft a month away, there’s little for teams to do right now except to scout and meet with possible draftees.
Then, there are teams that are going to better their lot in the draft via trades. One potential trade in particular is creating a buzz these days; one that has never happened before in the history of the league.
The Cleveland Browns, who hold the No. 2 selection, could attempt to move into the top spot held by the Tennessee Titans.
The target? Miami quarterback Cam Ward, the quarterback the Giants reportedly covet the most in this year’s draft class. Even though the Giants added Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston in free agency, they are still very much in the market for a young quarterback to develop for the future.
From Matthew Schmidt of Sports Illustrated:
ESPN’s Adam Schefter seems to think so, reporting that he expects the Cleveland Browns to try and trade up from No. 2 overall, something no team has ever done before.
“Well you also heard the Titans GM Mike Borgonzi say that he’s open to anything. And so he’s going to be listening to phone calls,” Schefter said on NFL Live. “… I expect the Cleveland Browns and the New York Giants both to make calls and let’s see if there’s a team that can come up with an offer that the Titans can’t pass up. Yes, the Titans absolutely do like Cam Ward. Yes, they’re ready to take him. But these teams have one month to change Tennessee’s mind and make an offer compelling enough to move Tennessee, which has a ton of holes on its roster, off the No. 1 pick.”
No one is sure what it will take to move the Titans off their spot. If they truly want Ward, it could be too rich for both the Browns and the Giants, as Schefter states. But, if Tennessee can be persuaded, is it worth giving up the draft/player capital to take a player who they don’t plan on playing this season?
