NEW YORK (PIX11) — Tensions are high after U.S. strikes captured Venezuela’s President Nicolas Maduro, now en route to New York for trial.
Hundreds hit Times Square Saturday for an emergency rally yelling “Hands off Venezuela” for the “No War on Venezuela, Stop the Bombings” protest.
It’s a protest over the US strikes that nabbed President Nicolas Maduro and his wife.
Ellen Miller, Organizer and Protester, said, “I think it’s really important for us to come out here and strongly show that we oppose this war, that we oppose the American imperialist drive towards war.”
Explosions rocked Caracas, and now demonstrators wave signs calling the whole thing illegal.
One protester said, “We have heard from our friends in Venezuela that there are countless victims from this bombing campaign.”
Another protester added, “It’s not about drugs, it’s not about democracy, it’s not about the last election, it’s because the Venezuelan Bolivarian socialist project did indeed challenge U.S. domination.”
They’re pushing to stop any more U.S. moves and let Maduro go.
This comes after President Donald Trump called the US military capture of Maduro a stunning success with no American losses.
He said Maduro and his wife are aboard the USS Iwo Jima heading to New York for trial on drug trafficking and corruption charges, praising the strikes as one of the greatest shows of US power since World War II.
“He personally oversaw the vicious cartel known as cartel de los soles which flooded our nation with lethal poison responsible for the deaths of countless Americans,” said President Donald Trump.
Trump announced the US will temporarily run Venezuela to ensure a safe transition, bring in oil companies to rebuild, and urged Maduro’s supporters to switch sides.
But that’s sparked fiery protests like this one in Times Square, where voices rage against the strikes, and demonstrators vow to keep fighting for their cause.
“To make an effect, to actually end the drive towards war, it’s going to be a mass ongoing organized movement of working class people all across the country and all across the world,” said Miller.
And more reactions are pouring in across the state. Maduro will be sent to a federal court in New York.
