Thieves make off with $2M in Anaheim art heist

Police in Anaheim are investigating a bold and unusual art heist involving the theft of two massive sculptures valued at more than $2 million.

The theft occurred over the weekend at a warehouse near Tustin Avenue and the 91 Freeway, and investigators believe heavy equipment – including forklifts – was used to carry it out.

The stolen sculptures, created by renowned artist and filmmaker Sir Daniel Winn, are not only highly valuable but extremely heavy. One of the pieces reportedly weighs about 2,000 pounds, while the other is even heavier at 4,000 pounds, according to a representative for the artist.

The sculptures were last seen on Saturday, when workers were present at the warehouse. When they returned Monday, both pieces were gone. Given the sheer size and weight of the stolen art, Anaheim Police believe this was a targeted theft.

“Due to the nature of the items that were stolen, it looks like somebody knew they were there and went there with a purpose,”  Sgt. Matt Sutter said. “This doesn’t happen often here in Anaheim. It’s a relatively quiet area.”

The brazen theft has raised concerns about warehouse security, especially in industrial areas that house high-value items. Police are urging local businesses to install surveillance cameras or security systems to help prevent similar crimes in the future.

The artist Winn is internationally known for his large-scale sculptures and fine art installations. The missing pieces are considered signature works in his collection and are likely difficult to move or conceal without drawing attention.

Anaheim Police are actively investigating and asking the public for help. Anyone with information about the theft or the whereabouts of the sculptures is urged to contact Anaheim PD detectives.
