What’s worse, the incompetence displayed by Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson and his fellow Maryland Democratic legislators concerning the state’s huge budget deficit, or that there will be no political consequences — zero — for any of them for their foolishness (“What happened to the Hogan surplus? | GUEST COMMENTARY,” Jan. 22).
Is Senate President Ferguson being serious when he says, “We did not anticipate the impact of these entitlement spending increases”? Why not? It’s your job, you’re the Maryland Senate president. How many financial advisers do you have or need, if you don’t know the math yourself? Go pay for some more of them — competent ones this time — as you don’t mind spending Maryland taxpayers’ money fast and furious, and you obviously need the help.
“But we didn’t know,” he cried. Is this the type of leadership we can expect from Ferguson and his Democratic colleagues, and Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, a Democrat, moving forward on this budget fiasco, and any other issue, really? How and why are Maryland taxpayers going to be burdened to pay for all this Democratic spending?
But don’t worry, Maryland Democrats, you’ll skate by on this and every other failure you lay on our state, as your foolproof, gerrymandered districts assure your political self-preservation, making any opposition essentially hopeless, and conservatives’ votes meaningless. Talk about voter suppression! While Maryland Attorney General Anthony Brown, also a Democrat, is all over the state of Louisiana because of its redistricting practices, maybe he should take a look at Maryland’s districts and do something about them. After all — believe it or not — he is the attorney general of Maryland, not Louisiana.
At every opportunity, Democrats are quick to call President Trump a dictator, yet what do we have here in Maryland, where any opposition to the ruling party is overwhelmingly crushed, not a chance? This is not a representative government. No doubt, AG Brown will be suing the Trump administration for this or that, blah, blah, blah — we’ve seen the routine. By the way, how much are these funny lawsuits costing Maryland taxpayers? No worries, we’ve got the money, just ask Senate President Ferguson.
Ironically, Maryland taxpayers’ salvation may come in the form of Gov. Moore’s national political aspirations as, apparently, he actually believes he can be elected president of the United States, maybe as soon as 2028. He doesn’t want to be portrayed as an incompetent manager of taxpayers’ dollars who came into office with a budget surplus and quickly turned that into a deficit, thereby needing to increase all kind of fees and taxes on Marylanders, showing American taxpayers what could be in store for them under a potential Moore presidency. Nope, that wouldn’t be a good look.
But we’ll take whatever help we can get, wherever it comes from.
