Despite coming up on the wrong end of the scoreboard, the Canucks were the better team from an analytics perspective. They held a 29-19 scoring chances advantage at even-strength while also winning the even-strength high-danger scoring chances battle 11-7. Unfortunately, the moral victory doesn’t help Vancouver in the standings as they once again drop a crucial two points on this road trip.
As the heatmap shows, the Canucks did not do a good job of boxing out the opposition in this game. Three of the five goals that got past Kevin Lankinen came off tip plays, which were the result of missed checks or lost battles. While the Kraken didn’t generate a ton of chances, they made the most of their opportunities, unlike Vancouver, who managed just three goals on 31 shots.

Looking at the forward lines, the best trio on the night was Drew O’Connor, Filip Chytil and Conor Garland. During their 11:37 of ice time, the Canucks held a 7-4 shots advantage and won the high-danger battle 8-7. Based on Saturday’s performance, this is a line that should stay together, as they drove the Canucks offence for the majority of the game.
Lastly, one standout was Tyler Myers, who finished Saturday’s game with a primary assist and four shots on goal. During his 17:21 of even-strength ice time, Vancouver held a 14-6 shots advantage while Myers recorded an xGF% of 87.17. Overall, it has been a strong season for Myers, who became the 12th member of his draft class to record 295 career assists.
