The Simpsons showrunner Matt Selman revealed that he hopes the series’ finale would be just another “regular episode.” While speaking to the New York Post on the show’s newly-released Christmas special, Selman weighed in on The Simpsons’ Season 36 premiere that spoofed a “series finale” and said that the show’s actual ending is “sort of an impossible thing.” “The show isn’t meant to end,” Selman shared. “To do a sappy crappo series finale, like most other shows do, would be so lame.” He continued, “The characters in this crazy show don’t age … I think later we’ll just pick an episode and say that was the last one. No self-aware stuff. Or, one self-aware joke.” One of The Simpsons’ writers Carolyn Omine also told the Post, “I’ve heard a few people say ‘I think [the finale] should be this’ or ‘I think it should be that.’ And it’s hard, because what the show is kind of keeps changing. So it can’t be the idea you’ve had in your pocket for a while.” While The Simpsons is still steam-rolling through its 36th season, Selman ultimately hopes that the series’ last episode will be just “a really good story about the family” to bid it farewell.
