WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Monday marked one decade since Metro’s 7000 series railcars entered service, officials said.
In a post on X, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) said that the first railcar went into service on the Blue Line.
It left from the Franconia-Springfield station.

The 7000 series hit some roadblocks along the way — in 2021, all 7000 series cars were pulled from service after a train derailed in October.
This derailment spurred investigations and changes to service. In 2023, Metro announced a plan to fix the railcars that would take years and cost millions.
A 2024 audit outlined Metro’s efforts to improve its embattled 7000 series cars.
In 2023, Metro announced its newest railcars — the 8000 series.
