What to avoid in the January sales

Brand new laptops

Unlike a lot of tech that will release in time for Christmas, new laptops generally arrive in the summer, to coincide with students returning to school. This means the price drops on older models don’t happen until the middle of the year. Unless there is a really good offer, like the one on the LENOVO Legion Pro 7, it’s better to hold out until later.

Buying the latest releases

Although you might be keen to get hold of the latest generation of tech in the January sale, this isn’t the best time to do it. Newly released tech is at its most expensive and will take time before big discounts start to appear. Instead, look at older devices like the iPhone 16 and PlayStation 5, which are now starting to appear for better prices.

Falling for fake discounts

Just because a product appears to be 20 per cent off, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll be saving that much money. Some shops will increase their prices before the sales, so that they can cut them in the sales to create discounts. Likewise, some older devices are almost never sold at their RRP, so there’s no need to rush. Instead, use a service like Which? or sites like PriceRunner to look at the average price of the item.
