FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (DC News Now) — The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office and Virginia State Police are investigating after a suspect and a bystander were shot by deputies after the suspect pointed a gun at a deputy during a traffic stop in Fredericksburg on Saturday.
At about 8:50 p.m., deputies from the Spotsylvania County Street Crimes Task Force said they were trying to arrest a suspect during a traffic stop at a gas station in the 3000 block of Plank Road.
As deputies approached the suspect’s vehicle., he attempted to leave and backed into a deputy’s vehicle.
The suspect then pointed a gun at a deputy, to which deputies responded by discharging their guns.
The suspect and a bystander, who was standing outside the gas station at the time of the incident, were shot.
The bystander, a man, was treated at the hospital for minor injuries. He has since been released.
The suspect was transported to the hospital where he is being treated for life-threatening injuries.
He was identified as Lawrence D. Toler II, 37, of Woodford, Va.
Toler is wanted out of Chesterfield on multiple felony warrants.
A gun was located inside Toler’s vehicle.
There were no other reported injuries during the incident according to deputies.
The investigation is ongoing.
Once the investigation is completed, this incident will be given to the Fredericksburg Commonwealth’s Attorney.
