(NewsNation) — Payment company Stripe accidentally sent an image of a cartoon duck to some of the employees who were being fired in the company’s latest round of layoffs.
Stripe is cutting 300 jobs from its global workforce, but some employees got an image of a yellow cartoon duck instead of the intended termination email.
Some of the employees were also told incorrect termination dates, which Chief People Officer Rob McIntosh corrected in a memo to employees.
McIntosh further said, according to CNN: “Some impacted Stripes received a notification error to their personal email accounts. I apologize for the error and any confusion it caused. Corrected and full notifications have since been sent to all impacted Stripes.”
Stripe previously laid off 14% of its workforce in 2022 and is currently undergoing a new round of cuts as part of its annual review.
Stripe CEO Patrick Collison came under fire for a 2024 post on X where he shared a photo of himself on a run in Tel Aviv. Stripe has offices in Ireland, where Collison is from, and the country has been an outspoken critic of Israel during the war on Gaza.
Stripe is one of the most highly valued startups, and one of its large investors is Sequoia Capital. Stripe is reportedly valued at $70 billion, and recently, Sequoia was offering to buy shares from investors who were looking to cash out since Stripe has not yet gone public.
Sequoia offered $27.51 for shares over the summer and promised to purchase up to $861 million from investors.
