State of Origin viewers have savaged Dylan Wright’s performance of the national anthem at Game One on Wednesday night.
The 2024 Australian Idol winner delivered a stripped-down, guitar-based rendition of Advance Australia Fair to a packed house at Accor Stadium in Sydney.
However, many viewers took umbrage with the singer’s ‘diabolical’, ‘hipster’ interpretation of the anthem written by Scottish-born Australian composer Peter Dodds.
It wasn’t long before they flooded X, formerly known as Twitter, with their thoughts.
‘What is this the Hipster Anthem? Diabolical,’ wrote one viewer.

‘Could be the worst anthem rendition in recent memory,’ quipped another.
‘Get this singy singy anthem sh*t out of here and sing the anthem properly,’ commented one more.
Eagle-eyed viewers also noticed that Blues player Jake Trbojevic also appeared to take a disliking to what he was hearing, with his expression soon becoming a meme on social media.
