(NewsNation) — A new study finds that standing desks aren’t as healthy as once perceived.
Researchers from the University of Sydney found that being on your feet for extended periods doesn’t improve cardiovascular health. It could, instead, potentially increase the risk of circulatory issues, such as varicose veins and deep vein thrombosis.
The study, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology also found that sitting for more than 10 hours a day increased both cardiovascular disease and orthostatic incidence risk, which reinforces the need for greater physical activity throughout the day.
“The key takeaway is that standing for too long will not offset an otherwise sedentary lifestyle and could be risky for some people in terms of circulatory health,” lead author Dr Ahmadi said. “We found that standing more does not improve cardiovascular health over the long term and increases the risk of circulatory issues.”
The researchers analyzed data from 83,013 adults in the UK Biobank health records database, focusing on heart conditions and circulatory diseases over a seven- to eight-year period.
