Selena Gomez has nailed her “losing face,” putting her skills on display at the 2024 Emmys.
Just days after explaining that she took some tips from Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel on Friends for how she would react if she lost the award for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series, Gomez did it live on air. In an amusing side-by-side clip showing the Only Murders in the Building star, 32, at the award show and joking around about practicing her clap, Gomez can be seen doing nearly the exact same motions.
“Selena Gomez doing her practiced applause for if she lost at the EMMYs 😂,” a fan account posted.
“SHES SO FUNNY 😭😭😭😭😭😭,” one comment read.
“Selena Gomez’s practiced applause shows her grace in any outcome at the Emmys,” said one user.
Another wrote, “Winning or losing, Selena’s a star! Love her dedication to being gracious.”
The joke began when Gomez appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon and explained that she had been rehearsing her reaction to losing. When fans compared it to the Friends scene where Rachel teaches Joey (Matt LeBlanc) how to act at the upcoming Soapy Awards, Gomez confirmed their speculations.
“Facts. @jenniferaniston taught me too lo’,” the Wizards of Waverly Place alum wrote over a clip showing the similarities between Rachel’s “gracious loser face” and her own.
The talk show host even made Gomez’s costars Martin Short and Steve Martin show their prepared reactions, prompting a laugh from the audience.

Although Gomez didn’t take home the win, John Leguizamo gave her a special shout-out to her for being part of the Latinx nominees this year, along with Sofía Vergara, Liza Colón-Zayas, Nava Mau and Kali Reis. He even joked that she has been “carrying Steve Martin and Martin Short for three whole seasons” of their hit Hulu show.
The Rare Beauty mogul also had her family cheering her on from home. She shared a sweet video to her Instagram stories of her nieces yelling “tia, tia,” the spanish word for “aunt,” at the TV screen.
“My goddaughter made my night … I’m also Tia by the way,” Gomez wrote in her caption.
