Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle expected to tell a House hearing that her agency ‘failed’ in not protecting Trump

U.S. Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle will testify Monday before the House oversight committee on the apparent failures that led to the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania on July 13.

Cheatle has come under pressure to resign, particularly from Republicans who confronted her at the party’s convention in Milwaukee last week. But she has remained firm in her decision to stay on as director, after working her way to the top over a 29-year career at the agency.

Last week, Cheatle faced criticism from police unions after the Secret Service initially blaming local police for not properly securing the rooftop where the gunman who shot Trump took aim. After a conversation last week with the Fraternal Order of Police’s executive director, Jim Pasco, Cheatle began to take clear responsibility for the security failure.

This is a developing story, please check back for updates.
