Scott Wedgewood made 25 saves and the visiting Colorado Avalanche shut out the New Jersey Devils 4-0 on Sunday night.
Ross Colton and Logan O’Connor scored first-period goals for the Avalanche, who are 3-1 on their five-game road trip. Casey Mittelstadt and Calvin de Haan each had two assists.
Wedgewood, who was drafted by the Devils and spent parts of three seasons with the club, improved to 4-0 against New Jersey. It was Wedgewood’s first shutout of the season and the seventh of his career.
Jake Allen made 19 saves for the Devils, who were shut out for the fifth time this season. New Jersey had won two straight overall and fell to 1-1 on its five-game homestand.
The Avalanche went 0-for-2 on the power play and the Devils finished 0-for-3.
Colton gave Colorado a 1-0 lead at 4:07 of the first period. Mittelstadt received a pass behind the net from Valeri Nichushkin and fed it in front to Colton, who one-timed it home.
O’Connor made it 2-0 at 14:52, redirecting a pass from de Haan past Allen from the slot.
Artturi Lehkonen increased the lead to 3-0 at 14:36 of the second period. Mittelstadt recovered a New Jersey turnover and passed it to Lehkonen, who had just come off the bench, for the breakaway goal.
The Devils managed only two shots on goal in the second period.
New Jersey pulled Allen with over five minutes remaining and Wedgewood was immediately tested, but made several saves with about 5:10 left to play.
Parker Kelly sealed the win when he scored into the empty net from the blue line off a pass from Mikko Rantanen with 3:55 remaining to make it 4-0.
Rantanen has 37 points (15 goals and 22 assists) this season.
