Santa Margarita’s baseball team suffered its first shutout loss of the season against the top high school pitching prospect in the nation.
The Eagles managed to scatter five hits against Corona’s Seth Hernandez in a 5-0 loss in the second round of the Boras Classic at JSerra High.
Hernandez, a Vanderbilt signee who is expected to be drafted in the top five of the upcoming MLB draft, pitched 6⅓ shutout innings and had 13 strikeouts. Corona (9-0) is widely regarded to be the top team in the state and has posted shutouts in eight of its nine games. The Panthers allowed just one run in their other win.
Hayden George, a UCLA signee, allowed five runs in five innings for Santa Margarita (7-3) and had eight strikeouts. Warren Gravely IV hit a double for the Eagles and Luke Blanchard had two hits.
Santa Margarita beat Paloma Valley in the first round of the Boras Classic and will play Vista Murrieta on Thursday at Mater Dei at 3 p.m.

JSerra 3, Vista Murrieta 2: JSerra withstood a late rally by Vista Murrieta to win a low-scoring game.
Santa Clara signee Max Reimers pitched six shutout innings, allowed just one hit and had 11 strikeouts for JSerra (5-3). Vista Murrieta trailed 3-0 entering the seventh inning and scored two runs before freshman Jax Janeski got the save.
UCLA signee Tyler Dunning had a double and a RBI. Blake Bowen singled and stole two bases. JSerra will play Corona in the semifinals Thursday at JSerra.
Mater Dei 11, Carlsbad 4: Brandon Thomas had three hits and two RBIs in Mater Dei’s win.
Bradley Beaudreau had two hits, scored three runs and drove in a run for Mater Dei (9-0). Dylan Wetzel drove in two runs and Austin Gerken had three RBIs despite not recording a hit. Landon Gordon had six strikeouts in 5⅓ innings.
Mater Dei will play La Mirada in the semifinals Thursday at Mater Dei.
Ayala 5, Cypress 3: Paul Dominguez homered, but Cypress fell to Ayala in the second round of the Boras Classic.
Spencer Kwon went 2 for 3 with a double, a stolen base and a RBI. Sophomore Gary Henneddy had a RBI single. All four runs Aiden Franco allowed were unearned and the Centurions made three errors.
Cypress (7-6) will play Birmingham Thursday at JSerra.
In the Sunset League:
Newport Harbor 7, Edison 0: Newport Harbor extended its winning streak to eight games with a shutout win over Edison.
Keaton Anderson pitched four shutout innings with three strikeouts. Grant Horsley and Brooks Francis each had two hits and two RBIs for Newport Harbor (9-1, 5-0).
Los Alamitos 4, Marina 2: Long Beach State signee Tristin Dalzell was excellent on the mound for Los Alamitos (10-2-2, 3-2) in a win over Marina.
The left-hander had eight strikeouts in 4⅔ innings, allowed zero earned runs and just two hits. Rowan Shelley had a hit with two RBIs and Tyler Smith drove in a run.
Nicholas Murrey had seven strikeouts for Marina (8-6, 1-4) and Max Conde went 2 for 2.
Fountain Valley 5, Corona del Mar 4: Fountain Valley had five different players drive in runs in a win over Corona del Mar.
New Mexico State signee Tyler Peshke had three hits and a RBI for Fountain Valley (7-6 1-3). Isaac Grimaldo and Josh Grack each had doubles with RBIs and Isaac Lomeli had a double with a stolen base.
In the South Coast League:
Capistrano Valley 7, Dana Hills 7: The two teams tied when the game was called due to darkness after the 10th inning.
Dana Hills (5-8-1, 0-1-1) scored seven runs in the first inning. Capistrano Valley scored five runs in the seventh to send the game to extra innings.
Landon Stewart had a home run, a stolen base and four RBIs for Capo Valley (7-5-1, 1-0-1). Sammy Rucker and Gavin Collins also had RBIs for the Cougars.
In the Sea View League:
San Juan Hills 5, San Clemente 1: Anthony Rasic pitched a complete game for San Juan Hills in a road win.
David Reeves hit a solo home run for San Juan Hills (8-6, 2-0) and Hudson Doss added a triple with three RBIs.
Cassius Sisson and Kai Cesare each had two hits for San Clemente (6-9, 0-2)
El Toro 3, Beckman 0: Nathan Broesamle pitched six shutout innings for El Toro (7-5, 2-0).
Logan Merwin and Talen Nodalo each had two hits with a RBI for the Chargers.
In nonleague games:
Orange Lutheran 1, Granada Hills Charter 0: Gary Morse had 16 strikeouts for Orange Lutheran in a shutout.
The Tennessee commit allowed just two hits. Hamilton Friedberg had a triple and Rock Akahi had two hits for the Lancers (10-1).
Mission Viejo 11, Tesoro 2: Mission Viejo scored nine runs in the first three innings.
Jack Boucher went 3 for 4, with a double, two stolen bases and four RBIs for Mission Viejo (7-6). Max Osika had two hits with three RBIs. Wyatt Dunlap allowed two hits in four innings with seven strikeouts.
Sebastian Skaff and Cooper Carrie each had two hits for Tesoro (1-9).
