For the second consecutive year, a Santa Margarita girl is the CIF-SS individual champion in golf.
Freshman Samantha Daniels shot a course-record 8-under-par 64 to claim the title last week at the CIF-SS individual championships/SCGA team qualifying tournament at Temecula Creek Golf Club in Temecula.
Daniels posted eight birdies to outdistanced Stanford commit Jude Lee of Orange Lutheran by four strokes.
Last season, Santa Margarita’s Leigh Chien, now playing at Stanford, won the individual section title.
Daniels’ performance helped Santa Margarita capture the SCGA qualifier by seven shots over Orange Lutheran and advance to Thursday’s CIF-SCGA SoCal regional/state qualifying tournament at Los Serranos Country Club in Chino Hills.
Santa Margarita qualified with a score of 359. Orange Lutheran (366), Peninsula (376) and Northwood (378) rounded out the top-four to qualify for the SCGA SoCal regional.
Sage Hill (382) and Mater Dei (388) finished fifth and seventh, respectively, in the next tier of teams.
Sage Hill’s Alisa Ching and University freshman Gabriella Gu tied in a group for third with scores of 69.
