(FOX 5/KUSI) — A 3.7 magnitude earthquake was recorded near Borrego Springs Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). An aftershock shortly followed, a 3.1 temblor that shook the same area.

The initial quake struck at 1:39 a.m., just northeast of the desert community, at a depth of about 6.6 miles, USGS data shows.

Residents as far north as Sierra Madre in Los Angeles County and Fontana in San Bernardino County reported feeling weak to light shaking, according to the survey’s Did You Feel It? map.

In San Diego County, light shaking was reported as north as Oceanside and Carlsbad, while many other areas — like San Diego, La Mesa, Chula Vista and El Centro — also felt movement.

Then at 3:05 a.m. came a 3.1 aftershock in the same area of Borrego Springs. Aftershocks, as explained by USGS, are smaller earthquakes that follow the mainshock within one to two fault lengths distance from the mainshock fault. This quake had a depth of around 6.3 miles.

The aftershock was felt as far north as Palm Desert in California’s Coachella Valley, the Did You Feel It? map shows. Locally, the second quake was felt in places like Valley Center and La Jolla.

There are no reports of injuries or damage in connection to these earthquakes.
