(NewsNation) — Republican state Sen. Randy Fine is projected to win former U.S. Rep. Michael Waltz’s Florida’s 6th Congressional District in a race against Democratic educator Josh Weil, according to Decision Desk HQ.
The seat was open after Waltz was tapped to be President Donald Trump’s national security adviser.

During November’s presidential election, Trump won the district on Florida’s eastern coast by 30 points.
Waltz also secured a majority win in the district before leaving the seat to join the Trump administration.
Democrats significantly outraised Republicans in recent months by putting at least $9 million behind Weil.
According to filings obtained by NewsNation affiliate The Hill in late March, Fine brought in $561,000.
Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis said last week that “regardless of the outcome,” it’s going to be an “underperformance” from the GOP that should not be placed at the feet of Trump.
“That is not a reflection of President Trump. It’s a reflection of a specific candidate running in that race,” DeSantis said, via The Hill.
“I think the district is so overwhelmingly Republican that it’s almost impossible for someone with an ‘R’ by their name to lose that district,” he added.
