Bill Maher isn’t going anywhere after HBO renewed Real Time with Bill Maher for two more seasons. It brings the late-night show through to the end of 2028.
The show will return for Season 24 on January 23.
The renewal means that Maher will come close to having hosted 800 episodes of the show since its launch in 2003. The show hasn’t changed much either with his opening monologue, one-on-one interviews, roundtable discussions, and the show’s signature segment New Rules.
Over the last few years, HBO has handed Maher a two season deal each time, the last one in 2024.
Last year, Maher was forced to deny that he was leaving the show. The comedian, who also hosts the Club Random podcast, had previously joked that he “may quit” if Donald Trump was elected for a second presidential term. After Trump won, Maher told CNN, “I don’t know where this started about I’m getting rid of Real Time. They’re going to have to drag me off of that show.”
“What I was saying was that I didn’t want to do another Trump term,” he added. “Not just because I don’t think it’s going to be possibly a great time for America. Maybe again, not going to pre-hate anything, but because I’ve already done all the jokes about Donald Trump.”
HBO exec Nina Rosenstein told Deadline that Maher was just kidding. “He recorded that podcast right after the election and he was honestly joking around. He’ll always say his first love is Real Time,” she said.
