A section of Will Rogers State Beach is closed after thousands of gallons of raw sewage was released into the ocean, according to the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
The closure begins at Sunset Boulevard and stretches half a mile on both the north and south sides.
According to Public Health, the leakage was caused by a root blockage at the 17300 block of Sunset Boulevard at the intersection of Paseo Miramar. As a result, about 6,700 gallons of raw sewage entered a storm drain and then the ocean at Sunset Boulevard and Pacific Coast Highway in Pacific Palisades.
Visitors should now refrain from touching the water and wet sand at beaches in the area.
Public Health will conduct water sampling starting on Friday. The closure will remain in place until bacterial levels meet health standards, the agency said.
