PRINCE GEORGE’S COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Polls are closed and results are coming in for the Prince George’s County special election, and as of Wednesday morning, Aisha Braveboy (D) led the race for the county executive seat, putting her in the lead to become the Democratic nominee.
Braveboy, 50, has served as the state’s attorney for Prince George’s County since 2019 and ran for county executive to fill the seat left vacated by Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D), who was elected to the U.S. Senate in November after defeating former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R).
In the special primary election, unofficial election results showed Wednesday morning that Braveboy had so far garnered 43% of the votes for the Democratic nomination, surpassing eight others, including former county executive Rushern Baker III, at-large county council member Calvin Hawkins Jr. and State. Sen. Alonzo T. Washington.
Leading up to the race, Alsobrooks had endorsed Hawkins, and Gov. Wes Moore had endorsed Braveboy.
The unofficial results were last updated just before 12:45 a.m. Wednesday, reflecting Braveboy’s strong lead. Baker had received 21.11% of the votes, Hawkins had amassed 20.22% and Washington had collected 5.53%.
According to a report from the Washington Post, Braveboy declared victory Tuesday night as tallies continued to come in.
On Wednesday morning, Baker took to X, reminding people that votes were still being counted, despite Braveboy’s lead.
“While current tallies may suggest a certain outcome, it is imperative to recognize that a substantial number of votes remain uncounted. We owe it to every voter to ensure that each ballot is meticulously accounted for before drawing any conclusions,” Baker wrote, in part. “The integrity of our democratic process hinges on this commitment. We remain steadfast in our dedication to upholding the principles of fairness and accuracy in this election.”
As far as the Republican nomination goes, unofficial results showed a tight race Wednesday morning, with George McDermott leading with 33.98% of the vote, followed closely by Jonathan White (33.59%) and Jesse Peed (32.43%).
Despite the attention the county executive race has received, it is not the only seat up for grabs in Prince George’s County.
In the race for the District 5 County Council seat, Shayla D. Adams-Stafford led the Democratic primary with 46.71% of the vote, followed by Christopher Wade (30.05%).
On the other side of the aisle, Fred Price Jr. is the only Republican running for the County Council seat, and therefore gathered 100% of the votes.
