A driver who crashed while trying to flee from police in Simi Valley Monday night is facing multiple charges, including child endangerment, after a 10-year-old passenger suffered a broken arm.

The incident occurred shortly before 8:30 p.m. when an officer attempted to pull the motorist over for failing to stop at a posted stop sign at Simi Town Center Way and Jefferson East, the Simi Valley Police Department stated in a news release.

“When the officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the driver turned off the vehicle’s headlights and fled southbound on Erringer Road,” police said.

During what turned out to be a two-minute pursuit, police say the suspect ran several red lights and then crashed into a parked car near Erringer Road and Covington Avenue.

Police learned that the driver, identified as 23-year-old Los Angeles resident Juan Angel Martinez-Martinez, had three passengers in the vehicle, including his mother, brother and a 10-year-old sibling.

“The 10-year-old sustained a fractured arm and additional injuries and was transported to a nearby hospital by AMR personnel,” police said.

Martinez-Martinez and the other two passengers were also transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Martinez-Martinez was eventually booked on suspicion of multiple felony charges, including evading a peace officer causing injury, reckless driving while evading, child endangerment and three other vehicle code violations related to evading a peace officer.
