BOWIE, Md. (DC News Now) — Road crews in Prince George’s County are preparing for the winter weather.
Bowie resident Anitra Thompson is glad to see crews on the job making sure roads are treated.
“My concerns is the icy conditions and children being outside at the bus stop waiting. My concerns are slippery roads and people driving and making sure that people are driving safely and our roads are treated for people to drive on it,” Thompson said.
One dozen crews from Bowie Public Works and eight sand spreader trucks are on standby and will start working overnight to salt area roads.
“We are going to bring in half the crew and we plan to utilize eight of the salt spreader trucks but we will closely monitor the weather, and we will bring in more crews as needed,” Hyung Ahn, Bowie Public Works acting director, said.
Crews have already begun treating area roads and have pretreated several challenging roads where they expect freezing rain and sleet to be a problem.
“Please pay attention to the weather reports and check the conditions before you hit the road. And if it is not necessary please stay home,” Ahn said.
Crews are planning to put down salt on major roads and then treat secondary roads when necessary.
