UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (DC News Now) – For the first time since 2018, a new person will be leading Prince George’s County.
Tara H. Jackson was named the acting County Executive in Prince George’s County after Angela Alsobrooks resigned Monday after winning Maryland’s U.S. Senate race in November.
Jackson is familiar with county government as she served as the county’s Chief Administration Officer (CAO).
“I believe that I’m here to maintain the stability of the government and to help us transition smoothly when a new county executive is elected,” Jackson said. “As I stand here today, I don’t see making any changes that are unnecessary. But I will say that I have to take it day by day.”
Based on laws in Prince George’s County, the CAO is to fill in for the County Executive if there is a vacancy. While the county government is planning for a full-time Executive, Jackson will be the one overseeing the biggest issues in Prince George’s County for the time being.
Jackson did speak on current projects in the county. Most notably, the county’s plans to be the new home for FBI Headquarters
“We’re planning our economic development team to continue to plan,” Jackson said. “There was a process, I think probably about a 10-year process. And we were successful at the end of that process.”
Jackson also talked about keeping the Washington Commanders in Landover.
“I want the team to stay, too. I think we have the better site,” Jackson said. “More opportunity in terms of development, it’s an important area to the county, and we have every plan and we have every intention of continuing to revitalize that area.”
No date has been set on when a special election will be held for the County Executive, but Jackson estimated about six months.
