Police officers shot and killed a man during an attempted traffic stop in Newport Beach on Thursday night, authorities have confirmed.
The incident occurred on Pacific Coast Highway, in between Superior Avenue and Hoag Hospital. At about 9:15 a.m., officers with the Newport Beach Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a man operating a motorcycle for unknown reasons.
Police said the man became “uncooperative” at one point during the stop. Eventually, at least one officer opened fire on the man. He later died at a local hospital.
As of Friday morning, he has not been identified publicly.
No officers were injured during the incident. It’s not yet clear if the motorcyclist was armed, or if he opened fire on the officers first.
People who live in the area told KTLA’s Carlos Herrera that they heard at least six gunshots.
No additional details were immediately made available.
