MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Md. (DC News Now) — Officers arrested a man after he allegedly shoplifted from a business and tried to get rid of a stolen gun while running from police in Silver Spring.
In a post on X, Jason Cokinos with the Montgomery County Department of Police (MCPD) said that at around 5:10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, officers were patrolling the downtown Silver Spring area when they saw a man running from a business.
The MCPD added that the man had just shoplifted.
Upon seeing him running, officers chased after him on foot. Cokinos said that’s when the man threw a handgun into some bushes.
Officers caught up to him and recovered the gun, which they determined was reported stolen, and also had an illegal extended magazine.

“Theft continues to be an issue that we will keep targeting in 2025 amongst other public safety issues such as removing illegal guns from our streets,” said Cokinos.
