A conflict at Crenshaw High School in Hyde Park led to the stabbing of an adult near campus Thursday morning, school officials said.
The attack was reported at about 9 a.m., when the Los Angeles Unified School Police Department called the Los Angeles Police Department for assistance with an assault with a knife, LAPD Officer Chavez said.
LAPD officers came to the school in the 5000 block of 11th Avenue looking for three suspected assailants, though school police later clarified that the attack occurred near, not on, campus.
“This morning, individuals came on to campus and were involved in a physical altercation with one of our students before school,” Principal Terrence Mudd said in a letter to the school community that was furnished to KTLA by an LAUSD spokesperson. “The altercation escalated and unfortunately resulted in stabbing of an adult caregiver outside of the school.”
Due to the attack’s proximity, the school was placed on lockdown, though that lockdown was later lifted, Mudd added.
The victim transported themselves to the hospital for treatment, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Initially, police said they were looking for three assailants, and “School Police has apprehended suspects that were involved in the incident,” Mudd added. Parents of students involved were also notified.
“Out of an abundance of caution, I have requested that School Police be on campus the rest of the day and thru mid-week next week,” Mudd said.
“The health and safety of our students remains our top priority,” he added.
