HENRICO, Va. (DC News Now) — After receiving a double bye, the George Mason women’s basketball team came out and dominated Saint Louis in the Atlantic-10 quarterfinals, winning 87-57, advancing to their first A-10 semifinal in program history.
“It was really good to see the ladies come out on fire tonight,” said head coach Vanessa Blair-Lewis. “These girls refused to be denied.”
“You could tell by the locker room energy we were ready to go,” said sophomore guard Kennedy Harris, who led all scorers with 18 points. “We knew we had to punch first because at the end of the day, we got to give them our best shot.”
The Patriots opened the first quarter leading 21-10, before leading by 19 at the half.
Four players scored in double figures. Eleven players scored points for George Mason, as they were in full control, all thanks to their fast start.
“We just felt free,” said senior guard Paula Suarez. “We were just being ourselves, taking our shots, sharing the ball. Whoever was open was going to shoot it and with a lot of confidence.”
“They just came in and were just locked in,” said Blair-Lewis. “You could tell in the locker room. They just looked at me like coach just get out the way. We ready.”
The win also gave George Mason their 25th on the season, which is the most in a single season in program history. However, the win is short-lived, as they will be back in action Saturday at 1:30 p.m. taking on Davidson for a spot in the conference tournament final Sunday.
