Southern California residents planning to travel abroad this summer or who didn’t get a California Real ID before the deadline can apply for a passport in person.
A special passport acceptance fair will be held at the University of California, Irvine, on May 10. Appointments will be required.
“These events are for first-time customers and children who must apply in person using Form DS-11. Adults who are eligible to renew a passport using Form DS-82 can submit the application online or by mail at any time,” the U.S. Department of State said on its website.
To apply for a passport, customers must bring documents proving their identity and U.S. citizenship.
A passport is also an acceptable alternative to getting a California READ ID, which is now required to board domestic flights and enter secure federal buildings like military bases and courthouses.
For those who can’t make the May 10 date, another passport fair will be held at UCI on June 14.
More information about the passport fairs can be found here.
UCI’s Passport Office is also open Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Appointments can be scheduled here.
