Palm Springs tries to woo back Canadian tourists

Amid tariff tensions, Canada and the United States aren’t as close as we used to be.

But if one Southern California vacation destination has its way, our neighbors to the north will know that, at least in some areas, they’re still very much appreciated.

Earlier this month, the city of Palm Springs hung banners and signs reading “Palm Springs ❤️ Canada,” with that heart symbol also featuring a Canadian flag, as reported by SFGate.

“Canadians are always welcome! Thank you Palm Springs International Airport!,” the city wrote on social media alongside images of the signs greeting travelers at the airport.

SFGate explained that the city would be wise to court Canadian travelers.

“A mass exodus would spell big trouble for Palm Springs,” the outlet said. “In 2017, Canadian visitors brought in about $236 million and stayed more than twice as long than other visitors, averaging eight days.”

The issue extends far beyond the Coachella Valley; cities like Chicago are also seeing reduced visits from Canadians, WBEZ Chicago reports.
