WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — A new store has opened at Capital One Arena, which allows you to celebrate Alex Ovechkin’s record-breaking 895th NHL goal.
In fact, that’s all you can buy there. The Washington Capitals opened the Ovi Shop on Monday to honor their captain.
“Got to get the merch while you can get the merch,” said Betty Ferree, of Springfield, Va.
Shits, hats, jerseys, hockey sticks are among the items for sale. Each one reflects the historic goal Ovechkin scored in Sunday’s 4-1 win at the N.Y. Islanders.
“My son wanted this hat, and couldn’t get it online,” said Kelley Gallagher, who traveled from Kent Island, Md. to get the ball cap.
The store used to be known as the Overtime Shop. But the Capitals wanted to do something special for their captain.
“We thought it was necessary to have an entire space available for our fans to shop, all things 895,” said Matt Voelker, the director of retail for Monumental Sports and Entertainment.
Getting to the store on 7th Street NW can be challenging, especially when it comes to parking around the arena.
“My son and I are tagging, team tagging. So somebody is in the car while the other shops,” Ferree said.
Donnie Shaw had a special reason to buy something for his son.
“His birthday is May 18th, and this is what I’m going to give him,” Shaw said while holding a cap and a t-shirt. “I’m gonna blow his mind with this.”
The Ovi Shop will only be open during the Capitals’ home games.
