An MTA bus driver lost control of an empty city bus Friday morning and broke through a retaining stone wall in the Spuyten Duyvil section of the Bronx, leaving the vehicle dangling over the street.

The incident occurred shortly after 8:30 a.m., when the unidentified driver crashed through a stone retaining wall over Kappock St. near the Henry Hudson Parkway, leaving the front half of the bus hanging about a dozen feet off the ground.

The sidewalk and street below were littered with large stones that broke off the wall in the collision.

The vehicle was not carrying any passengers at the time, according to MTA spokesman Aaron Donovan. FDNY first responders were able to get the driver safely off the bus.

“The driver was uninjured,” FDNY Battalion Chief Martin Meaney told reporters on the scene. “He was evaluated by EMS and released.”

Meaney said the MTA was taking the lead in the investigation into what caused the crash.

“It could have been a lot worse,” the battalion chief said. “We’re lucky there were no pedestrians walking underneath and no vehicles traveling [underneath] during the incident.”
