(NewsNation) — Woman who laugh or cry after intercourse are exhibiting a normal, albeit rare, reaction, according to a study.
The analysis from Northwest University found some women experience a slew of physical and emotional responses beyond laughter and tears. They can also encounter nosebleeds, headaches and even hallucinations.
The responses are described as peri-orgasmic phenomena, effects not related to the normal physiology of an orgasm.
“While there have been case reports of women laughing, crying or having unusual physical symptoms during orgasm, this is the first study to characterize what these phenomena are, and when they are most likely to occur,” said Dr. Lauren Streicher.
The study’s data was gathered after Streicher and her team posted a video detailing a peri-orgasmic phenomena. Nearly 3,800 women viewed the video and provided answers via a survey.
“Women need to know that if they have uncontrollable peals of laughter every time they orgasm (and nothing was funny), they are not alone,” added Streicher.
The research also revealed out of 86 women who encountered peri-orgasmic phenomena, 61% acknowledged experiencing physical symptoms, 88% reported experiencing emotional responses, 52% experienced more than one symptom and 21% experienced both physical and emotional symptoms.
