Three people are dead after a double homicide led to an off-duty officer-involved shooting in Fontana, police announced Sunday.
Officers were dispatched at around 9:40 p.m. on Saturday for reports of a shooting in front of a business on the 15200 block of Summit Avenue, according to the Fontana Police Department. Preliminary investigation unveiled that a 45-year-old man had opened fire on two victims, only identified as a 43-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman, outside the location.
Just after the shooting, however, the suspect was confronted by an off-duty San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department officer, who Fontana police said happened to witness the incident.
At some point during the confrontation, the officer shot the suspect for reasons that were not immediately disclosed. The suspect, who has not been publicly identified, was ultimately pronounced dead at the scene.
In addition, the other two shooting victims were taken to local hospitals, where they later died from their gunshot injuries. Investigators did not reveal whether they were known to the suspect.
“The investigation is ongoing, and no more details are available right now,” Fontana Police stated.
Anyone with information about the shootings is encouraged to contact law enforcement.
