WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) said a staff member for a U.S. congressman faces charges after officers found ammunition on him, including a high-capacity magazine.
Michael Hopkins, 38, works for Democratic U.S. Rep. Joe Morelle of New York.
USCP said Hopkins entered the Cannon House Office Building around 8:45 a.m. on Monday and put his bag through screening. Offiers noticed what looked likd ammunition on the X-ray screen. They searched the bag, and USCP said the officers found four ammuniton magazines and 11 rounds of ammunition.
Hopkins told officers that he forgot the ammunition was in the bag.
USCP said the charges against Hopkins were unlawful possession of ammunition, including one charge for possession of a high-capacity magazine.
Morelle represents New York’s 25th Congressional District. His chief of staff, Jo Stiles, released a statement Monday:
