New videos show deadly, fiery plane crash into Simi Valley homes

New videos obtained by KTLA show the moment a small plane crashed into a Simi Valley neighborhood on Saturday afternoon, killing two people and a dog on board while spreading fire and destruction to nearby homes.

Just before 2 p.m., about 40 firefighters responded to calls that a plane had crashed into two homes with smoke showing in the 200 block of High Meadow Street in the Wood Ranch community of Simi Valley, officials confirmed.

Nearby Ring security footage captured a slim view of the plane crashing into the side of two homes, erupting into destruction with a loud bang.

Residents were inside the homes at the time, but were able to evacuate before the fire broke out.

A neighbor spoke with KTLA’s Omar Lewis, explaining that he was outside his home trimming trees when he noticed the plane flying unusually low and tilted, soon realizing he was witnessing an emergency in progress. 

Shortly after he stepped away to tell his wife about what he was seeing, the plane plummeted and slammed right into where he had just been working.

Cell phone video then showed the immediate aftermath of thick black smoke, sirens blaring and flames tearing through two two-story homes on High Meadow Street

Around 8 p.m. Saturday, the Ventura County Fire Department confirmed two people were killed in the crash — the pilot and a passenger — along with a dog.

While officials have not released information about the victims’ identities, unconfirmed reports say the small aircraft was registered to a pilot who rescued dogs with his plane, and that the dog involved in the crash was possibly one of those rescued.

“A Vans RV-10 crashed near High Meadow Street and Wood Ranch Parkway in Simi Valley, California, around 2:10 p.m. local time on Saturday, May 3,” explained the FAA in a statement. “The plane departed from William J. Fox Airfield in Lancaster and was heading to Camarillo Airport. The FAA and NTSB will investigate.”
