BOWIE, Md. (DC News Now) – The Baltimore Orioles season begins Thursday, but the team’s Double-A affiliate, the Chesapeake Baysox, is getting an upgrade in Prince George’s County.
Maryland Park and Planning Commission, Attain Sports, and the Maryland Stadium Authority are all working together for renovations on Prince George’s Stadium.
On Thursday, those involved in the project came to the stadium for the official groundbreaking. Tara Jackson, the acting county executive in Prince George’s County, says this move is bigger than just baseball.
“Our stadium has long been a symbol of collaboration and passion for our community. Whether it’s concerts… movie nights or community yard sales,” explained Jackson. “This stadium has served as a dynamic hub where sports, entertainment and community converge.”
The 50 million dollar project will add two new video boards, a training facility and more.
Those in the Orioles organization hope these additions serve as a statement for all of baseball to invest in their minor league teams.
Orioles General Manager Mike Eilas says the project has a lot of support in Baltimore.
“We got a lot of people pulling on the rope to keep our facilities first rate, and we’re going to have excellent facilities up and down the organization,” said Eilas. “Once this project is completed, it’s going to be the envy of the league, in my opinion.”
Eilas also encouraged all Orioles fans in the county to check out the new team and stadium additions.
“If you live in PG, this is a great place in birdland to come watch Orioles baseball,” Eilas emphasized. “We got new video boards. We’re gonna have great players out here. It’s been exciting teams for the last two years. Come enjoy the facility. It’s awesome.”
Construction is expected to continue through 2026, but will not disrupt the Baysox’s upcoming season.
