CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — With less than a week before Election Day, there are concerns about the information and misinformation voters may be getting. A new app is out that may help.
For the last several weeks, if not months, we’ve all been bombarded with political messages. Many of those messages come from the political candidates themselves, while others come through advertisements and social media posts, in addition to traditional news outlets.
Sometimes the statements sound too good to be true, while other times it’s hard to verify the accuracy of the messages. However, a new app called “Smart News” is aimed at taking in as much information as possible and then sorting out what’s solid information and what is not.
“We double down on quality every day that we are trying to program this app. Are we perfect? No, but nobody is. We literally, as I said, we have people working 24/7 who are trained to spot misinformation, whether they are again, these trust and safety analysts, or whether they are a journalist,” said Wendy Bounds, an award-winning journalist who is now with SmartNews.
Analysts at Smart News say the biggest sources of misinformation are social media and items created through artificial intelligence. They also say it’s wise to consume news from a wide variety of outlets and compare the information.
