Cardi B may be a Grammy-winning rapper, but she is a fan of Netflix‘s You first and foremost. In previewing the official trailer for the twisty crime series, which drops tomorrow, the streamer enlisted the “WAP” singer to give her spoiler-free reactions.
Fans of the Penn Badgley vehicle and/or Cardi B — plus the extremely online — will recognize the marketing move as a nod to the two entertainment industry figures’ Twitter-first relationship. The two first began a meme-filled correspondence when the Gossip Girl alum name-dropped the musician in an interview, citing her as a person who has an “authentic relationship” with fans on social media and contrasting that with his self-described inaptitude with online platforms. Since then, the two have switched profile icons and talked glowingly about each other during press appearances. Netflix’s X account even once changed its bio to read: “Petition to get Cardi B to guest star in Season 4 of You!” (That obviously did not happen, but her track “I Like It” did play in the first episode of that season.)
“Hello, you,” Cardi B began in her best impression of Joe Goldberg (Badgley), the duplicitous and murderous antagonist front and center of You.
“When I tell you … girl, I am shook,” she continued. “I cannot wait, and it’s like they got a little, cute surprise. I cannot wait for you guys to see the trailer. Y’all gonna gag. Got me gagging!”
Netflix has previously released a couple of short teasers of the fifth and final season of the series. Returning April 24, the show will find Joe back in his native New York City, now as a member of the elite he once reviled. Season 4 featured the addition of Charlotte Ritchie as Kate, Joe’s target and eventual love interest, and two end up together at the finale — despite the revelation that he’s a killer (though he conveniently sidesteps the fact that he also murdered her father).
