Hundreds of residents evacuated the Patrick Sullivan Senior Apartments on Chicago’s Near West Side due to a burst pipe, according to Chicago police and the Chicago Housing Authority.

A Chicago Housing Authority spokesperson said that a pipe ruptured in the basement of the apartment complex Saturday evening, resulting in “flooding and the loss of heat and hot water.”

Police responded to a call to assist the fire department at the apartment complex in the 1600 block of West Madison Street. Upon arrival, residents were being relocated from the building. About 400 residents had to be relocated, with some sent to a hotel for shelter, according to police.

Two residents transported to the hospital for evaluation were a 70-year-old and an 84-year-old, both with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Crews worked on repairs overnight and were able to restore heat, but the building is still without hot water, according to the Chicago Housing Authority.

“We expect to have a fuller update, including when residents can return home, later today,” the Chicago Housing Authority said Sunday.
