Halloween in New York City could be one for the record books this year, as temperatures are expected to be way above normal, according to early forecasts.
While the unusually high October temperatures in the Big Apple should drop to more seasonal levels starting later this week — with highs in the mid-to-upper 50s due to a cooler air mass moving into the region — the autumn spell is likely to break by the middle of next week.
According to Weather.com, the high temperature on Oct. 31 this year could reach a summer-perfect 80 degrees, with intervals of cloud and sunshine and pleasant winds.
The situation isn’t expected to change drastically as the sun sets and the Halloween spirits rise. The lowest temperature predicted for Thursday night should be around 62 degrees — or 20 degrees warmer than last year’s festivities.
AccuWeather is also forecasting a picture-perfect Halloween: “Sunny to partly cloudy and very warm,” with virtually no chance of rain.
Allan Nosoff, a meteorologist with News 12 New York, said Thursday should be the warmest day next week, with temperatures likely to hit the low 80s. That could easily jeopardize the city’s hottest Halloween on record, when thermometers marked 81 degrees back in 1946.
Trick-or-treating day is also likely to be a scary-dry one this year. In fact, with no measurable rain so far this month, the city is close to not only having it driest October on record but its driest month ever, according to AccuWeather.
Currently, New York City’s driest month was June 1949, with rain of just 0.02 of an inch.
