Sarah Danser, known for appearing as a contestant on Naked and Afraid, has died following a car crash. She was 34.
The reality television star, who described herself as a “pirate” on social media, was involved in a collision Sunday night, Oct. 20, in Kahala, Hawaii, Honolulu police reported, per KSLA.
Honolulu police say a 59-year-old man was driving eastbound when he lost control of his vehicle and collided with a parked car. According to the outlet, Danser was a passenger in the vehicle, and was hospitalized and listed in critical condition prior to her death on Tuesday, Oct. 22.
PEOPLE reached out to reps at Warner Brothers Discovery, the network that airs the competition series, for comment but did not immediately hear back.
In Danser’s Instagram bio, she identified herself as a “Boat Captain, SCUBA Diver [and] Survivalist.”
Island Divers Hawaii, where she worked, shared a tribute to their Facebook account on Thursday, Oct. 24.
“Heavy hearts as we say goodbye to a good friend and great captain. Sarah brought such great energy to everyone she came in contact with. You will be greatly missed,” their post read.
The message also contained a screenshot of her last Instagram upload — a selfie of Danser smiling while on a boat.
“Who recognizes this boat? Look who’s driving her! 😅🙌,” she captioned the Oct. 11 post, which was geotagged as Hawaii’s Maunalua Bay.
Per KSLA, Danser was born in Castle Rock, Colorado, but had lived in Hawaii for about 12 years. Her part-time residence was a boat at Kewalo Basin, allowing her the freedom to travel.
“Magical is the way to describe her. Sarah had this positive energy about her that just really filled the environment that she was in,” her brother, Jake Danser, said, per the news station.
Sarah’s Naked and Afraid costar Melissa Lauren also offered her condolences.

“Sarah was [one] of the most adventurous souls I’ve ever met. She wasn’t only a fierce survivalist on Naked and Afraid (she completed XL in South Africa with me), but a Breast Cancer survivor who kept an inspiring and positive attitude through her treatment,” Lauren said via Facebook on Thursday.
Her post included a selfie of the women smiling together.
“She loved the ocean, nature and exploring – I always considered her a ‘modern day pirate.’ She was one of those people that saw the world through the eyes of a child, in awe of the things that many of us take for granted. Rest easy Sarah, I know youre out there exploring somewhere,” her post concluded.
Speed appeared to be a factor in the fatal crash, but not drugs or alcohol, police said, per KSLA.
