The inmate was 41-years-old when she was sentenced to serve a minimum of 23 years behind bars.

Herself and co-defendants, Jason Andrews, Peter Knowles and Vaughan Davies, were called “sadistic” in court for Mr Farmer’s brutal torture.

Davies, then 18, and Andrews, then 40, were convicted of murder alongside Clarke.

Knowles was cleared of murder, but convicted of manslaughter.

Police were called to Mr Farmer’s flat in Yardley, Birmingham, on May 19, 2012, where officers found him with stab wounds and broken ribs.

A court heard Clarke and her accomplices poured boiling water over their victim.

They also force-fed him a cocktail of drugs drugs, chopped of his hair, attempted to cut off his hand and slashed his face in the brutal torture session.

In total, the victim suffered five stab wounds as well as 17 separate head and neck injuries.

Judge William Davis KC told the court: “One or more of you poured boiling water over him for no better purpose than to humiliate and torture him.

“I take the view that the conduct which you carried out over a period of two hours came very close to sadistic.

“All of this to a vulnerable man in his own home when all he had done was invite you in as friends.

“This was a cruel and unpleasant way of ending the life of a man who had fallen on hard times, and, who, over the years had done service to his country.”

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman, an independent watchdog, confirmed Clarke died at a Greater Manchester hospital on October 26.

An inquest into her death was opened and adjourned until April next year at Warrington Coroner’s Court.

It is understood Clarke’s death is not being treated as suspicious.

The Prisons and Probation Ombudsman is now conducting an investigation, which happens after all prison custody deaths, and deaths post-release on occasion.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: “HMP Styal prisoner Lisa Clarke died in hospital on Sunday, 26 October.

“As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will investigate.”

At the time of Mr Farmer’s murder, his heartbroken son said: “No one deserves to be tortured to death and left to rot.”

Mr Farmer’s family said: “This cruel, senseless and barbaric act committed without remorse or feeling has left an emptiness that can never be filled.

“Brian had a colourful and eventful career in the British Army but coming back home to Hay Mills meant he was able to spend many happy hours with his family. Kind hearted and a true gentleman, he would think nothing of sharing his last morsel.

“The callousness and barbarity of these acts played out in court shocked and sickened us all. No human being deserved to be treated and degraded in this way.”
