A dramatic rescue unfolded Saturday after a motorcyclist riding trails in the San Bernardino Mountains plummeted approximately 100 feet over a hillside.

The April 26th incident unfolded just before 3:30 p.m. about a half mile off the Cleghorn Trail in the Cajon Pass.

The rider, according to a statement posted to the fire department’s X account, sustained moderate injuries during the fall but was reportedly unable to get back to the roadway.

Initial requests for a helicopter hoist rescue had to be cancelled because of high winds and power lines in the area.

“Due to the challenging terrain and distance from the roadway, specialized Urban Search and Rescue personnel responded,” fire officials said. “Fire personnel quickly established a rope rescue system utilizing mechanical advantage to safely raise the rider back up to the road, where emergency medical treatment continued.”

The rider was then rushed by ambulance to a local trauma center.

Video of the rescue released by the San Bernardino County Fire showed crews utilizing the rear wheels of two responding county vehicles to anchor the rope rescue and successfully pull the injured rider up the hillside on a gurney to safety.

Officials had particular praise for two county-owned all-terrain vehicles used during the rescue.

“The San Bernardino County Fire ARVs are specialized vehicles that have proven to be invaluable across the county in recent weeks,” fire officials said. “On several different incidents they have enabled crews to access difficult terrain, shuttle personnel and patients, and transport equipment more efficiently.”

The all-terrain vehicles, according to the statement, have also reduced the fire department’s rescue times, allowing for injured patients to get medical treatment quicker.

“The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District reminds outdoor enthusiasts to exercise caution when exploring off-road trails/recreational activities,” fire officials added.
