(NewsNation) — One person is dead after two mid-sized jets collided on the ground Monday afternoon at a suburban Phoenix airport.
A Learjet 35A veered off the runway after landing at Scottsdale Airport and struck a parked Gulfstream 200 business jet around 2:45 p.m. local time, officials said. Scottsdale city officials said the Learjet’s left main landing gear is believed to have failed upon landing.
Five people were affected by the crash. In addition to the person killed, three others were taken to a hospital. Emergency crews had to extricate one person from an aircraft. A fifth person declined medical treatment, officials said.
Scottsdale Airport will remain closed until further notice, officials said. The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash.
“I am extremely grateful to the first responders and airport operations staff on scene today for their swift action and service,” Scottsdale Aviation Director Gary P. Mascaro said in a news release. “We offer our deepest condolences to those affected by this tragedy.”
Mötley Crüe’s Vince Neil owns plane
The Learjet was arriving from Austin, Texas, Scottsdale officials said. Numerous media reports, citing public records, say the aircraft is owned by Vince Neil, lead singer of the heavy metal band Mötley Crüe. He was not aboard, The Arizona Republic reported.
The jet collision in Arizona follows a series of deadly U.S. aviation crashes in Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and western Alaska.
